Hello, awesome Walker families!!
We had a blast during our Walker PROUD Spirit Week this past week!! (Maurice deffffffinitely understood the sports team attire assignment😉) |
Our 5th grade ELA classes started reading their fantasy novels this past week! Students were introduced to each book with a "book tasting" where they read the back cover and the first few pages of all four books. Students ranked their choices. All students were assigned to read their first or second choice. Throughout this unit, students will engage in book clubs with people who are reading the same book and another group with students who are reading different books in order to discuss the general themes found in the fantasy genre.
Students in Ms. Copley's class examined the phases of water during Science class!! |
Walker Wolverines read anywhere and everywhere!! |
Students in Ms. Pollard's and Ms. J. Lloyd's Virginia Studies classes explored and later presented Powhatan artifacts from the Valentine Museum in Richmond. (All 5th graders will eventually enjoy exploring these artifacts in their own classrooms!)
Here are the updates and information for this week:
1. Halloween costumes on F 10.31.25 - Walker students may wear a Halloween costume to school on Halloween (F 10.31.25)! Students may not wear masks, face paint, bring fake weapons, and/or wear anything with excessive blood/gore. Basically, please keep things school appropriate, but have fun! Repeat: NO FAKE WEAPONS OF ANY KIND!!
2. Executive functioning skills update - We're so excited that most students have set academic goals for the year. There are a few groups left that need some support, but our amazing teachers have lovingly worked with your kids to help them reach a goal that they can track as they continue learning throughout this year. There is a great deal of self satisfaction (and research behind) setting and reaching for goals, even if they are not fully met. Please continue to regularly check in with your child and ask them if they are on track to meet their goal. These goals should be written in the front of their agenda (pg. 1) if you're curious to know. As always, thank you for your ongoing support of your child and Walker as we learn how to teach these valuable skills.
3. Walker Book Fair - Walker will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair on November 5 through November 11. Students will have a chance to come in with their ELA classes to purchase books, posters, journals, and other materials. We will also host a Family Night on Thursday, November 6 from 5-7 PM.
If you are available to volunteer for a 1.5-2 hour shift, please sign up here. Please remember that in order to volunteer at any CCS school, you must complete the volunteer training linked here!
Please take a moment to visit our Book Fair Homepage to find out how to set up an ewallet for your child and how to contribute to our Share the Fair to ensure that more students are able to get books! This site will also allow you to preview the fair and purchase items online. Please reach out to Emily Arico, Walker's librarian, if you have any questions!
4. Gifted Gazette - Please check out the Quarter 1 edition of Walker's Gifted Gazette!

7. CCS Ski and Snowboard group - The CCS Ski and Snowboard Group is gearing up to hit the slopes this winter! Interested in buying a discounted lift pass or finding a ski buddy? See the group's website to sign up for a pass by December 5, 2025.
8. Morning drop-off (repeat) - DO NOT skip the line when you are doing morning drop-off. Seriously. We have a very specific traffic pattern designed to maintain student and staff safety, and when folks skip the line, it undermines the safety of the system. As a reminder, here are our arrival (and dismissal) procedures, and here is a map showing the traffic flow.
